Complete Guide: Succeeding at Cloud Migration in Africa

Cloud migration is now essential for companies seeking greater agility, lower infrastructure costs, and faster development. Yet a poorly planned migration can be costly — in time, money and operational stability.

Why migrate to the cloud?

The benefits of the cloud are numerous and well documented: automatic scalability, pay-as-you-go pricing, high availability, enhanced security, and access to the latest AI technologies. For African companies, the cloud also represents an opportunity to close the technology gap without investing in costly physical infrastructure.

The 6 migration strategies (the 6 R's)

1. Rehost (Lift & Shift)

The fastest strategy: moving existing applications to the cloud without modifying them. Ideal for a quick migration with minimal risk, but it doesn't fully leverage cloud benefits.

2. Replatform

Making a few optimizations during migration — for example, moving a database to a managed service like AWS RDS — without fully refactoring the application.

3. Refactor / Re-architect

The most ambitious approach: rewriting applications to fully leverage cloud-native capabilities (microservices, serverless, containers). Costly in the short term but generates the most long-term value.

4. Repurchase

Replacing an existing application with a cloud SaaS. For example, migrating from Microsoft Exchange to Microsoft 365.

5. Retire

Identifying and eliminating obsolete applications not worth migrating.

6. Retain

Keeping certain applications on-premise for compliance, latency or cost reasons.

Key steps to a successful migration

Phase 1: Audit and discovery

Map your existing infrastructure: servers, applications, databases, dependencies and data flows. Use assessment tools like AWS Migration Evaluator or Azure Migrate to get a complete picture.

Phase 2: Defining the target architecture

Design the target cloud architecture considering your performance, security, availability and budget requirements. Define the network strategy (VPC, subnets, security groups), availability zones and disaster recovery strategy.

Phase 3: Proof of concept

Before migrating production, deploy a test environment to validate the architecture, test performance and identify potential issues.

Phase 4: Migration in waves

Migrate progressively in groups of applications (waves), starting with the least critical ones. Each wave comes with a rollback plan in case of issues.

Phase 5: Optimization and governance

After migration, optimize your costs (rightsizing, reserved instances, auto-scaling), set up cloud governance (tagging, policies, budgets) and train your teams.

Mistakes to avoid

Don't underestimate data egress fees. Don't neglect team training. Don't migrate without a rollback plan. And above all, don't assume the cloud is automatically cheaper — it is, provided it's well optimized.
